LMS students and their teacher Mrs. Hackett participated with Amazon Future Engineer and the Personal Robots Group at the MIT Media Lab to learn more about AI through a virtual 15 hour course.  The curriculum targeted students in 5-8th grade to explore artificial intelligence and ethics. Students were able to participate in a range of hot-topic discussions and hands-on, creative activities to learn about how artificial intelligence is impacting society today. Students were able to receive robots to solve real-world problems and use machine learning to make them intelligent.

Students worked with Randi Williams (MIT), Tejal Reddy (MIT), and students from a middle school in Miami, Florida and were able to  learn about what qualifies as artificial intelligence, how it works, and what ethical concerns might surround its widespread use. At the end of the week, a showcase was held where students  shared their learning with their communities and the public.

This opportunity was the perfect introduction for the new LMS STEAM Lab that will take off this fall as a connection class for students in 6th - 8th grade. LMS was the recipient of the CS4GA (Computer Science for Georgia) $25,000 grant for schools teaching computer science in 2019-20 so the new lab is already equipped with 3d printers, Legos, Robots, MicroBit, Chibitronic, and Makey Makey circuit boards, Parrot Drones and more.

Volunteers, business partners, and mentors in Industry and Computer Science are always needed as this lab will operate using project based learning. If you would like to help support this groundbreaking opportunity for Lakeview Middle School students, please contact Mrs. Hackett - [email protected].
